USL News Release
Wednesday, June 6, 2007
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL Premier Development League and W-League Teams of the Week for the seventh week of the USL season, honoring Cascade’s Stefen Ostergren and Toronto’s Brittany Moore as the Players of the Week, respectively.
Stefan Ostergren has proved to be the critical scoring element to the Cascade Surge attack this season, scoring in five of the club’s seven matches for a team leading seven goals. Falling quickly behind in the division with just one win on the campaign, Ostergren gave the Surge some life with all three goals Saturday in their 3-1 victory over Spokane.
The striker out of Ohio, where he attends the University of Akron, erased an early 1-0 deficit in the 19th minute when Surge newcomer Ayouba Moussa Issoufou led Ostergren with a pass that the latter easily put in the back of the net. He doubled the lead three minutes before the break when he collected a ball in the 18-yard box behind the Spider’s defense and finished on a shot just inside the post. Ostergren capped the evening’s scoring in the 54th minute when he found space about 20 yards out in the center of the field. After taking aim, he struck a shot to the lower corner of the goal that beat Spokane’s diving keeper.
As a redshirt freshman last year for Akron, he played in just 10 games off the bench, but is quickly developing into a potential star with his performance for the Surge after also leading the Zips to a preseason 2-0 friendly victory over the Cleveland City Stars in the USL Second Division preseason with a goal earlier this year before moving to Salem.
The Toronto Lady Lynx are quickly demonstrating that they will be a contender for the Eastern Conference spot in the W-League championship with their 4-0-0 start. The club recorded three dominating performances on the week with a 6-0 win over Hamilton Wednesday, a 3-0 victory over Vermont Saturday and a 2-0 win over Rochester Sunday.
Leading the charge for the Lady Lynx was midfielder Brittany Moore, who recorded two goals and four assists on the week. Moore started the week off with an assist on the opening tally against Hamilton 26 minutes in and went on to push the game well out of reach with the third goal and setting up the fourth – all before the end of the half.
Three nights later Moore set up the first two goals of the game to Adrienne Ruhe Lischke in the seventh and 22nd minutes. The following night against rival Rochester in a much more closely fought match, Moore provided the winning goal in the 28th minute as her club held on for the win.
The All-South Atlantic Conference selection is in her first season with the Lady Lynx after completing her sophomore season at Carson-Newman College in her home state of Tennessee.
