LAREDO, TX – The time has come for the 2008 Premier Development League (PDL) Season to get started for the Laredo Heat Soccer Club and the 2007 PDL Champions are headed out of town to open up the defense of their title. This will be the first time in the short history of the club that it will not play their first league game in Laredo.
The Heat will open the season against a very formidable foe in the Mississippi Brilla in Jackson, MS on Friday, May 9th. The Brilla narrowly missed the playoffs last season, their first one in the PDL. It was a 3 – 3 tie against the Heat last season on the last day of play, along with a win by El Paso, that kept the Brilla out of the playoffs.
“The Brilla organization, though young, is very well run. They have some of the finest and most organized individuals in the league which in turn makes it a pleasure to work with them. It’s no surprise that last season they were recognized as the Rookie Franchise of the Year," said Heat General Manager, J.J. Vela. Vela added, “And this season, they have signed Craig Demmin, a former Jackson, MS resident that played in the MLS and USL-1 to play along side his brother, Dwayne Demmin, a 2007 All PDL Selection and former member of the Trinidad and Tobago National Team."
Vela concluded, “Opening up on the road will be a new experience for us and like I have said before, playing versus the Mississippi Brilla will give us a very fast look at what we will be up against in the Mid-South Division of the PDL."
On Sunday, May 11th, things do not get any easier for the Heat as they will take on another second year club in the Baton Rouge Capitals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Heat will leave Jackson, MS on Saturday morning and make the three hour trip to Louisiana capital city. The Capitals will be playing the El Paso Patriots on Saturday, May 10th to open their season.
“By no means will we be expecting an easy road trip”, stated Vela. “If anything, both these clubs would love to open up their seasons with wins against the defending PDL Champion. I know I would if I were in their shoes”. Vela also mentioned, “If there is one thing that we have found out that is dangerous in the PDL, its second year teams. This is because after one year under their belt, they learn the ins and outs of player signings and most importantly, player recruitment and what it takes to compete head to head with the other teams in the league."
Other News
The Heat will be without the services of Felix Garcia for their first two games. Garcia is currently with the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team in England. The U-20’s will be playing three international friendly games versus English Premier League Reserve Squads Bolton FC (May 7th), Manchester United FC (May 8th) and Liverpool FC (May 10th).
Around The PDL Mid-South Division
Last weekend saw the opening of the PDL Season in the Mid-South Division. First year club, the Houston Leones beat the New Orleans Shell Shockers by a score of 3 – 0 in Houston. In El Paso, the new Austin Aztex visited the Patriots and the game ended in a draw, 0 – 0.
With the win over the Shell Shockers, the Leones, a Cruz Azul affiliate in the United States, became the overall point leaders in the Open Cup Qualifying Race with three points and more importantly, the three point goal differential.
The Heat’s four opponents for Open Cup Qualifying are the Mississippi Brilla, the Baton Rouge Capitals, the DFW Tornados (home game) and the Austin Aztex (home game).

Garcia Sets up Two Goals as U-20 MNT Tops Bolton Reserves
BOLTON, England – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team defeated the Bolton Reserves, 2-0, on Wednesday at Reebok Stadium behind goals from Jorge Flores and Chris Agorsor.
Felix Garcia, who came on as a second-half sub, set up both goals for the U.S. and made an immediate impact by drawing the penalty kick that was converted by Flores in the 50th minute.
In the 73rd minute, the Laredo, Texas native beat a defender down the right side, cut along the endline and slotted the ball for Agorsor, who beat the Bolton goalkeeper with a one-time shot.
Next up for Thomas Rongen’s squad are friendlies against the Manchester United Reserves on May 8 and the Liverpool Reserves on May 9.

El Heat Iniciara su temporada fuera de casa

LAREDO, TX – Esta por iniciar la temporada 2008 de la liga Premier Development y el actual campeón de la PDL Laredo Heat Soccer Club abrirá su temporada como visitante. Este será la primera vez que el club abre la temporada fuera de casa.
El Heat abrirá su temporada en contra del equipo Mississippi Brilla en Jackson, MS el viernes 9 de Mayo. Brilla quedo fuera le postemporada el pasado ano ya que en la ultima jornada empato a 3 goles con el Heat y la combinación con el triunfo de El Paso impidió que avanzaran a la postemporada.
“La directiva del equipo Brilla aun siendo joven es muy bien dirigida. Cuentan con un personal muy organizados y es un placer trabajar con ellos ya que son muy profesionales. Y no fue una sorpresa que la liga los reconoció como la franquicia novata del ano," comento el Gerente General, J.J. Vela. Vela agrego, y esta temporada han firmado al jugador Craig Demmin, ex jugador de la MLS y USL-1 para jugar al lado de su hermano, Dwayne Demmin fue seleccionado en el 2007 por la PDL y formo parte de la selección nacional de Trinidad y Tobago."
Vela concluyo, “Abriendo la liga fuera de casa es una experiencia nueva para nosotros y como lo he comentado en el pasado jugando en contra del equipo de Mississippi Brilla nos dará un parámetro para saber como va estar la división del medio sur de la PDL.
El domingo 11 de Mayo, las cosas no serán nada fáciles para el equipo del Heat ya que enfrentaran a otro equipo joven como lo es Baton Rouge Capitals en Baton Rouge, Louisiana. El Heat partirá a Jackson, MS el sábado por la mañana y harán un viaje de 3 horas rumbo a la capital de Lousiana. El equipo de los Capitales iniciara su campana en contra de Los Patriotas de El Paso el sábado 10 de Mayo.
“Por ningún motivo esperamos juegos fáciles fuera de casa”, comenta Vela. “Estos dos equipo que va enfrentar el Heat fuera de Laredo anhelan poder ganarle al campeón de la PDL y así iniciar con el pie derecho la temporada 2008. Vela menciono, “Si hay una cosa que es peligrosa en la PDL son los equipos novatos. Y esto es por que después del primer ano ellos aprenden como funciona la liga, como reforzar su equipo para poder competir en la liga."
Noticias de última hora
El Heat no contara con los servicio de Félix García para sus primeros dos encuentros. García actualmente se encuentra con el equipo nacional sub 20 de los Estados Unidos jugando partidos amistosos en Inglaterra. La selección nacional jugara tres partidos amistoso en contra de las reservas de los equipos de la liga Inglesa Bolton FC (7 de Mayo), Manchester United FC (8 de Mayo) y Liverpool FC (10 de Mayo).
Alrededor de la división Medio Sur
El pasado fin de semana fue el inicio de la división Medio Sur de la PDL. En el primer ano como equipo en la liga los Leones de Houston derrotaron en casa a los Shell Shockers de New Orleans por un marcador de 3-0. En El Paso, el nuevo equipo de Austin los Aztex igualaron a 0 goles con los Patriotas.
Con la victoria de los Leones de Houston filial en los Estados Unidos del Cruz Azul de México, se colocaron como lideres para calificar a la US Open Cup con 3 puntos pero con la diferencia de goleo y que actualmente tienen +3.
Los cuatro rivales del Heat para calificar a la US Open Cup son los equipos de Mississippi Brilla, Baton Rouge Capitals, DFW Tornados (jugaran como locales) y Austin Aztex (locales).
