ST. LOUIS, MO – The St. Louis Lions improved to 2-0 on the young season Sunday afternoon shutting out the Colorado Rapids U-23 1-0.

St. Louis held possession for most of the first half and the game, outshooting Colorado 13-6, but was not able to get any good chances at the net. Lions goalkeeper Brian Forrest made a diving stop in the 31st minute on Colorado’s only chance of the game and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

St. Louis was finally able to get on the board in the 56th minute when forward Tommy Heinemann buried a pass from Juice Holmes to make the score 1-0. For Heinemann, the goal was his second of the season and his 16th in 16 games dating back to last season.

Heinemann had another chance later in the match when he made moves to beat the Colorado defense and goalkeeper Joe Willis but the shot was blocked by a diving Colorado defender who made it back to the line at the last possible second to save a goal.

“I think we looked very strong today,” said Lions Head Coach Tony Glavin after the match. “We’ve got a few things to work on obviously, like making the most of our offensive chances, but we have two weeks to train before out next match and I’m confident the guys will look even better the next time out.”

St. Louis goalkeeper Brian Forrest turned in his second consecutive solid performance of the week saving the only shot on goal he faced earning his first shutout of the season.

“Brian did an exceptional job for us this weekend,” said Glavin. “After not being able to train much with us in the preseason I was a bit concerned but he really showed me how well he has matured. I’ve always thought he had the potential to be a special player and he is starting to prove that now.”

Forrest started both matches for the Lions this weekend allowing just one goal and picking up the victory in both.
St. Louis University standouts Calum Angus and Kyle Patterson had an impressive match as well, each getting two shots.

The Lions currently stands alone atop the Heartland Division with six points and also lead the Central Conference in U.S. Open Cup Qualifying with two qualifying matches remaining. The Lions next match will be Saturday, May 24 at 5:00 p.m. at home against the Springfield Demize.
