NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Ironbound Express (1-0-2) played the inaugural home contest of their first-ever USL Premier Development League season Wednesday night, hosting the Westchester Flames (1-1-1) at Lubetkin Field at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
After no goals found the back of the net in 90 minutes of play, Newark would have to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Both offenses had their opportunities in the first half with multiple shots sailing just wide on both ends of the field. The best chance for the Express came in the 12th minute when midfielder Justin McGrath broke loose inside the Westchester box and sent a hard shot wide of the left post. Newark goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski made a pair of brilliant saves to end two one-on-one situations for the Flames in the final minutes of the opening half, and the two clubs headed into the locker rooms at halftime with no points on the scoreboard.
The Express got offensive in the 68th minute when they delivered a flurry of shots toward the Westchester goal, but none of the balls found the back of the net. Newark would briefly have a one-man advantage in the closing minutes of the game when Flame midfielder Lamar Chancey was issued a second yellow and ensuing red card in the 88th minute, but the Express would be unable to capitalize.
Newark now sits in second place in the PDL Northeast Division, one point behind the division-leading Brooklyn Knights (2-0-0). The Express return to Lubetkin Field next Thursday to host the Richmond Kickers Future (1-0-0) with kickoff slated for 8:00 PM EST.
