MISSISSIPPI - The Baton Rouge Capitals made a lot of changes to their organization since the end of the 2007 season, including a new coach and an overhaul of their roster. The result is a much-improved team that visited Longabaugh Field on Saturday night.
Mississippi Brilla FC made similar changes, with a new coach, and a host of new players. On Saturday night, it was more recent changes that made the difference for Brilla. Two players who didn’t make the game day roster from last week’s draw with Laredo provided the goals. In fact, Brilla inserted a total of four new players into the starting lineup. Regular Brilla captain and midfield stalwart, Ousmane Coulibaly was serving a one-game suspension after being sent off last week.
Brilla FC started strong with Paul Babba knocking in a Phillip Buffington pass in the 5th minute. However, Baton Rouge’s strong midfield starting causing problems for Brilla as they conceded huge amounts of possession throughout the rest of the half.
The trend would continue in the second half with the Capitals creating dangerous chances in front of the Brilla goal. Quality finishing eluded Baton Rouge until the 58th minute when Tony Judice put away a rebound to knot the score at one each.
Baton Rouge continued to control the game, missing chance after chance. Being unable to finish would prove their undoing when Brilla’s Adam Braun put away a close-range chance provided by Michael Lindsay in the 82nd minute. The crowd of 934 would will Brilla to hold on during the next 8 minutes to take the three points.
Mississippi coach Steve DeCou was excited about the win saying, “Getting three points out of this game was huge. Now we will work on some deficiencies in training and see what our team is made of when we go on the road next weekend.”
Brilla travels to Houston next Friday to take on first year franchise, the Leones. Then Saturday the team will head to Dallas to take on the DFW Tornados, a team Brilla split with last year.
