LA MIRADA, CA - The Seahorses finally gave their home fans something to cheer for Wednesday night, beating the Orange County Blue Star 1-0 at La Mirada High for their first home win of the year and goalkeeper Greg Larson’s 3rd shutout of the season.

Tomislav Colic put the Seahorses on the board 30 minutes into the half with a brilliant header off a Seahorse corner kick that proved to be all they would need. It was fitting for Colic to net the winner, as he and fellow midfielder Cristian Rus kept Orange County goalkeeper Kristopher Minton occupied all night long with one shot or cross after another. Just three minutes into the match, Rus drove down the left side and got off a nice cross that Colic headed just wide of the gaping net, but Colic made no such mistake on his next chance, getting great separation to make a much-needed Seahorse goal look like a routine header. The goal ended a three-game scoring drought for the Seahorses.

The win was especially surprising given that the Blue Star took the team’s first meeting this year with a commanding 4-1 victory. While Blue Star forward Jeffrey Clark netted all of his team’s goals in that meeting, Rus and Colic were the overpowering offensive force in this match for whom Orange County had no answer. Clark did get a chance to sting the Seahorses in the second half on a set piece, but he blasted the free kick wide from 25 yards out.

Goalkeeper Greg Larson also had to step up when Blue Star midfielder Tomer Konowiecki found some space inside the box and ripped a low shot, but Larson managed to get just enough of the ball on a beautiful fingertip save to preserve the Seahorse lead.

The win was extra special for the Seahorses as they were still without Diego Meija and Conan Hawkins, who both received red cards in the team’s Saturday match against San Francisco, in which five cautions and two ejections were served. In comparison, Wednesday’s game saw no cards given out to either team.

From here, the Seahorses will head out to Bakersfield on Saturday to take on the Brigade, who took the teams’ first meeting this year 1-0. The match should be an exciting one as both teams will be looking for their third win on the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bakersfield Christian High School.
