USL News Release
Friday, July 25, 2008
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced Friday the statistical award winners for the 2008 Premier Development League season and the All-Conference Teams, honoring 44 of the top players in the league as voted on by team coaches and general managers.
Garnering the Scoring and Goal Scoring Championship for most points and goals in the season was Yakima Reds striker Junior Garcia. After scoring just once in nine games last season, Garcia became the focal point of Yakima’s offense, registering 15 goals and 10 assists while playing in every game this season to also lead the team in minutes played with only 22 minutes spent on the sideline this year. Garcia’s assist total was also good enough for a tied for second in the league with Michael Mattson of Central Florida.
Taking the Assist Leader honor was Fresno’s Fabricio Codeceira. The Fuego veteran hit double digits with 13 on the year after posting at least five each of the past five years and finishing third in the assist table last year with nine.
Miguel Gallardo of the expansion Austin Aztex finished the campaign as the GAA Champion with a goals against average of 0.615 for the season, beating out BYU’s Brandon Gilliam (0.703) and Chicago’s Patrick Sperry (0.727). He also finished the campaign with the league lead in shutouts with nine.
Among the All-Conference selections are a pair of players who are receiving the honor for the fifth time in their careers. Michigan forward and 2007 MVP finalist Kenny Uzoigwe and Fresno Fuego midfielder Fabricio Codeceira. Uzoigwe was initially honored in 2003-04 while playing for the Toledo Slayers and has garnered the All-Conference selection the past three years with Michigan. Codeceira has earned the honors five years straight, all as a member of the Fuego.
Michigan’s Nate Jafta and Cape Cod’s Graham Munro three-time All-Conference selections. Mike Holody (Michigan), Tommy Heinemann (St Louis), Dywane Demmin (Mississippi), Juan Ibarra (Laredo), Ryan Roushandel (Atlanta), Zak Boggs (Bradenton) and Pablo Campos (Fresno) all received the honor for the second straight year. Darius Barnes (Cary) was previously honored in 2006.
