LONDON, ON -- Forest City London was announced as the newest USL Premier Development League team for the 2009 season at a private press conference in London, Ontario hosted by former Canadian National Soccer Team captain and professional player Jason deVos. Also announced was the name of their first head coach, the location of its home field, team uniforms, and plans to initiate a team structure that supports and nurtures local talent.
“I’m pleased to announce that London’s new entry in the United Soccer Leagues’ Premier Development League is called Forest City London,” said Ian Campbell, CEO of the franchise.
Campbell added that FC London, as the team will be known locally, is committed to providing great family entertainment at a low cost. “Not only will fans experience some incredible soccer, but off-field activities will be designed to engage and entertain.”
FC London has taken an important first step in ensuring the team on the field is competitive by announcing Martin Painter as the team’s head coach.
“Martin is one of Canada’s pre-eminent soccer professionals,” said Campbell. “For more than a decade, Martin has dedicated himself to the development of young soccer players. We believe he is ideally suited to teaching, training and coaching some of the most talented young soccer players in North America.”
Supporting Painter will be former professional soccer player, Dominic Mescia, FC London’s Director of Soccer. Painter and Mescia will work directly with Campbell in developing an infrastructure that will foster future development of top level soccer talent in the region. This will include open tryouts, involvement of FC London players at summer and March Break youth camps, and other programs to help develop enthusiasm for soccer in the Southwestern Ontario community.
Campbell went on to say FC London will debut in 2009 and will play at the North London Stadium at Adelaide Street and Kipps Lane in London, Ontario. The lighted facility has ample parking and is on a London bus route. The first home game for FC London is currently scheduled for Friday, June 5th, 2009.
Home and away jerseys were also unveiled. These high performance UMBRO jerseys are popular among soccer enthusiasts around the world and are being supplied by UMBRO through London’s Source for Sports.
The team logo pays homage to both traditional soccer crests and the city of London. “We think this is a timeless design that will serve us well as we look to a long future in London,” said Campbell.
“We expect FC London t-shirts, scarves and replica team jerseys to be in demand – especially given our team crest and colours,” said Campbell. “Plus our sponsors will be executing all kinds of exciting promotions.”
London’s Mayor, Anne Marie DeCicco-Best is pleased to welcome the new London franchise. “Soccer is a popular family-friendly sport in our community. It is clear the ownership group has the experience, expertise and passion to create a fun and exciting soccer atmosphere in the city that will lead to long-term success for our young, talented soccer players.”
There is a real sense of excitement surrounding London’s new PDL franchise. “With the ongoing growth and expansion of the USL Premier Development League throughout North America, London is well placed to compete and succeed both on and off the field,” says Francisco Marcos, Founder and President of United Soccer Leagues.
Campbell went on to say that there will be announcements over the next few weeks and months about the website (www.fclondon.ca), schedules, ticket packages, player signings and special promotions.
