NEWARK, NJ -- One day after suffering an unfortunate 3-1 road defeat to the Long Island Rough Riders (2-0-0), the Newark Ironbound Express (3-2-0) rebounded with a 5-1 victory over the Rhode Island Stingrays (1-1-1) Sunday at Lubetkin Field.
The game marked the fourth contest for the Express in eight days and leaves Newark atop the Northeast Division standings with nine points.
The Express wasted little time in this match-up, with midfielder Kyle Clancy scoring a Chris Karcz feed in just the second minute of regulation.
Newark continued to stay on the attack as the aggressors, and PDL points leader Jerrod Laventure hooked up Aviv Volnerman in the 21st minute to stretch the gap to 2-0.
Two minutes later, a Rhode Island foul on the right flank led to a restart for the Express, and defender David Topolski stepped up to the ball to put it back into play. The former Polish First Leaguer then put a hard strike on the free kick and gave it just enough English to sail it past Stingray goalkeeper Kyle Bak and into the back of the net, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Rhode Island finally put themselves on the board in the 33rd minute on a Jonathan Pereira notch, but Newark defender Joe Ruesgen set up a Laventure knock in the next minute to hang a 4-1 count on the scoreboard going into intermission.
The lone score of the second half came on a Marc Godelman to Monmouth University graduate Rob LaRocca tally in the 71st minute, and the Express held on the rest of the way to secure the 5-1 win.
Newark will now take a bit of a break with their next game slated for Wednesday, May 27th, when the Express host Long Island at Lubetkin Field, looking to avenge their loss to them this past Saturday.
