USL News Release
Wednesday, June 10, 2009
TAMPA – United Soccer Leagues announced today the Premier Development League Team of the Week for the seventh week of PDL action honoring Kalamazoo forward Tom Oatley for his six goal, one assist week in which the Outrage extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with three victories. The Outrage currently leads the Great Lakes Division with a record of 5-0-2.
Oatley’s first performance of the week was his best as it came against the Chicago Fire, who will move on to face the USL First Division Minnesota Thunder in the US Open Cup after defeating the Milwaukee Bavarians, 3-1 Tuesday. Oatley scored 8th and 26th minute goals to lift the Outrage over the Fire on Wednesday, June 3.
In their second of three matches last week, Kalamazoo downed Fort Wayne 6-1. The Outrage was again led by Oatley, who had two goals in the match’s first 18 minutes. Oatley later completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute on an assist by defender Mark Barone.
Two days later, Kalamazoo defeated the Michigan Bucks 3-1. And, for the third match in five days, Oatley was the best player on the pitch. He opened the scoring in the 12th minute on an assist by Daniel Kelly. Three minutes later, Oatley assisted teammate Luke Norman on the eventual game-winner.
Other noteworthy performances from the midpoint week of the PDL season included a tight race for goalkeeper of the week. Ryan Meara of Long Island completed a 2-0-0 week for the Northeast Division leading Rough Riders that included a 3-1 win over Brooklyn and a 2-0 shutout win against New Jersey. In those two matches, Meara accumulated seven saves to edge Toronto Lynx goalkeeper Nils Binstock.
Four days apart, the Lynx picked up their first four points of the season drawing London, 1-1 before downing Cincinnati, 2-1. In those matches, Binstock combined for 15 saves while only allowing a goal per game. The Lynx were outshot in each game, 9-4 against London and 10-3 versus Cincinnati, making Binstock an integral part of his team’s success.
