TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer Leagues announced tonight that the Portland Timbers U23s will play host to the 2010 Premier Development League Championship, set for Friday-Saturday, August 6-7, at PGE Park. The Timbers, who defeated Kitsap, 2-1, tonight to claim the Western Conference title, will be joined in the Final Four by the Thunder Bay Chill, Baton Rouge Capitals and Reading United AC.
Semifinal matches will be played on Friday, August 6 (times TBD), with the #2 seeded Thunder Bay Chill, the 2008 PDL Champs, taking on #3 Baton Rouge in the first matchup. The second semifinal will feature the top-seeded Timbers U23s vs. #4 Reading United. Seeds were determined based on regular season final standings.
The 2010 PDL Championship match will take place at 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET) on Saturday, August 7, live on FOX Soccer Channel. The consolation match is set for 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET).
Portland heads into the championship weekend trying to make history. At 18-0-0 through the regular season and conference championship, the Timbers U23s are two games away from becoming the first team in the PDL’s 15-year history to finish as undefeated champions. Portland’s opponent in the semis, Reading United (12-2-4), took the Eastern Conference title with a 3-2 victory against the Ottawa Fury.
Friday’s other semifinal in Portland pits the Central Conference champion Thunder Bay Chill (14-2-2), a 2-1 winner against the Michigan Bucks Saturday, against the Southern Conference’s Baton Rouge Capitals (11-2-3), who defeated the Houston Leones, 2-1.
