WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The Des Moines Menace wasted little time in starting things off on the right foot in the team’s new home. Thanks to three goals in the first 10 minutes of tonight’s season-opening exhibition at Valley Stadium, the Menace cruised to a 6-1 win over Imperio in front of a paid crowd of 2,390.
Marco Cherisma scored an unassisted goal in the game’s first minute to kick off the scoring fiesta on a night marked by live mariachi music and pinatas.
Joe Klosterman, back for his third season with Des Moines, found the net in the third minute, from an assist from another familiar face – Tomas Boltnar.
The Menace jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the eighth minute when Tucker Sindlinger scored, assisted by Cherisma.
Des Moines’ other goals came on assisted scores from Cherisma (18th minute) and Boltnar (50th minute), and a tally by Nedim Hasnabegovic, assisted by Mike Noonan in minute 71.
Imperio’s lone goal came in stoppage time when Eduardo Escobedo put the 2007 Des Moines International League champions on the board, with the assist to Jaime Perez.
Up Next: The Menace opens its regular season next Saturday (May 10), hosting the St. Louis Lions at Valley Stadium. Principal Financial Group is the game-title sponsor of this 2 p.m. match, featuring the popular Diamond Dig, sponsored by MC Ginsberg.
