www.menacesoccer.comSaturday, May 10WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The St. Louis Lions came from behind to top the Des Moines Menace in a hard-fought regular-season opener for both teams this afternoon in front of announced crowd of 2,440 at Valley Stadium.
Menace forward Danny Cruz – also a member of the United States U-18 national team – put the home team on the board first. His goal, assisted by UNLV teammate Nikki Paterson, came in the 26th minute and was the game’s only score until late in the first half.
The Lions tied the game in the final seconds of first-half regulation time when Tommy Heimann scored unassisted. Calum Angus notched the visitors’ game-winning goal in the 81st minute, thanks to a well-placed cross pass from Jona Andrade. St. Louis out-shot Des Moines 11-7.
“We knew it was going to be a tough battle,” Menace head coach Casey Mann said. “Our guys were coming together for the first time. We saw some bright spots. We also saw some spots to work on. Overall, the guys gave good energy and a good effort.”
